Purge vs tool-changer — which multicolor system pays off by volume?

There are two ways to print in multiple colors, and they have opposite cost profiles.
Purge systems — a single nozzle plus a filament switcher (Bambu's AMS, Anycubic's ACE, Flashforge's IFS, or the built-in unit on the Anycubic Kobra X). Cheap to buy, but every color change purges filament into a prime tower. On small multicolor parts that waste often runs 30–50% of everything printed.
Tool-changers — several independent toolheads, one per color (the Flashforge Creator 5, Snapmaker U1, Prusa XL). More expensive to buy, but color changes cost zero purge — you only pay for the part.
So which one actually costs less? It depends entirely on how much you print. Let's find the break-even.
The two cost shapes
- A purge system has a low fixed cost (cheap printer) and a high variable cost (wasted filament on every part).
- A tool-changer has a high fixed cost (expensive printer) and a near-zero variable cost.
That's a classic break-even problem. The tool-changer's higher price is paid back gradually by the purge filament it doesn't waste. The question is how many parts it takes.
A concrete example
Take the cleanest apples-to-apples pair in the catalog — both budget, both 4-color, one purges and one doesn't:
- Anycubic Kobra X (purge system): $299
- Flashforge Creator 5 (tool-changer): $699
- Upfront gap: $400
Now the per-part purge waste the Creator 5 avoids, in PLA at $22/kg:

Divide the $400 gap by the per-part saving to get the break-even part count:

The pattern is clear: the bigger and more colorful your parts, and the higher your volume, the faster the tool-changer pays back. For small, occasional multicolor prints, the purge system's low entry price wins for a long time.
The three levers that move the crossover
- Part size + color count. Purge is roughly a fixed cost per color swap, so it's a bigger slice of a small part than a big one. Heavy, many-color parts favor the tool-changer hard.
- Filament price. The math above uses cheap PLA. Swap in PETG ($25/kg), a specialty silk, or expensive PVA support ($55/kg) and every wasted gram hurts more — break-even can drop by half.
- Your monthly volume. A hobby seller doing 50 multicolor parts a month will take years to reach 900+ parts. A print farm doing 800/month gets there in weeks.
There's a fourth, secondary factor: time. A prime tower also takes print time to build, so tool-changers finish multicolor parts faster — more throughput per month, which spreads amortization further. It's not the main lever, but it tilts the same way at volume.
The verdict
- Hobby / occasional multicolor (under ~100 parts/month) → Purge system. The upfront saving on a Kobra X or A1 beats the waste for a long time. Don't pay tool-changer money you won't amortize.
- Small production (100–400 parts/month) → It depends on part size. Big, colorful parts already favor a tool-changer; small keychains still favor purge. This is exactly the zone where you should run your own numbers.
- Serious production (500+ parts/month) → Tool-changer. The saved purge filament plus the extra throughput pays back the premium in months, and keeps paying every month after.
There's no universal winner — there's your winner, and it depends on what and how much you print.
