When this printer makes sense
The XL is Prusa Research's large-format flagship — 360 × 360 × 360 mm usable volume, tool-changer option with up to 5 independent hotends (multi-material with real zero purge, like H2D). Prusa ships direct: $1,899 (single-tool) to $3,499 (5-tool). Makes sense for a professional studio that needs real large-format volume + multi-material without purge.
Strengths and limitations
Strengths
360 mm³ volume — bigger than the H2D (350 × 320 × 325) and K2 Plus (350³). Tool-changer with up to 5 independent hotends = multi-material without real purge. Segmented heatbed (16 heating zones) — saves energy on smaller parts. Stock PrusaSlicer. 5+ year Prusa support.
Limitations
Direct import has the cited drawbacks: customs, international warranty, delay. High-end price ($1,899-3,499) puts the XL in commercial territory — only makes sense if you actually generate volume revenue. Tool-changer is a complex system: learning and maintenance cost time. No actively heated chamber (passive optional only).
Typical print cost
A large 300 g functional PETG part on the XL single-tool costs $6.50-8 per unit in a 10-batch (amortization over $1,899). For multi-material 4-color (with 5-tool), real zero purge means a unit part 30-50% cheaper than H2D or K2 Plus in the same config. Clear ROI for commercial shops; no clear use case for hobbyists.
Example calculation
For a 50 g part in PLA, 6 h print time and 8% failure rate. Currency follows your selection at the top.
- Filament$1.10
- Energy$0.22
- Amortization$0.38
- Failures (8%)$0.14
- Unit Cost$1.83
- Final Consumer Price (3× / 6% / 2%)$7.96
