Print cost on the Prusa MK4S
The MK4S is the 2024 refresh of the MK4 — keeps the loadcell Nextruder and cartesian platform, but adds a new textured PEI sheet, improved heatsink and high-speed firmware optimizations. Same Prusa DNA of easy repair and modular upgrades.

When this printer makes sense
The MK4S is the choice for makers who want an open ecosystem, strong Prusa Research support, and premium quality without locking into Bambu's closed stack. The reprap community is robust, the firmware is open-source (PrusaSlicer is the industry reference), replacement parts are standardized, and modifications are well-documented. Prusa ships direct from Czechia — $799 USD assembled, $649 kit. Worth the extra wait and customs hassle for makers who prioritize open-source philosophy over plug-and-play convenience.
Strengths and limitations
Strengths
250 × 210 × 220 mm build volume slightly smaller than Bambu but well-used. Nextruder direct drive with automatic calibration (Load Cell tech). Official Prusa support measured in years — first printer to deliver reliable replacement parts 5+ years out. The software (PrusaSlicer) is the industry standard — every other slicer forks from it. Huge community with clear upgrade paths (MMU3, Cool MOSFET, etc.).
Limitations
Bedslinger like the A1 — caps effective speed on tall parts. The MMU3 (multi-material) is more fragile than AMS — larger purge, prone to jams. Shipping internationally takes 2-6 weeks depending on region. Outside the EU and US, Prusa's distribution network is thin — most international buyers import direct.
Typical print cost
For a functional 80 g PETG part similar to the X1C example, the MK4S unit cost lands close (around $1.10-1.40 per unit in a 10-batch) with amortization over $799. The MK4S competes head-to-head with the P1S in total cost of ownership. Choosing between them comes down to philosophy (open Prusa ecosystem vs polished Bambu) and geography (local Bambu reseller in many regions vs Prusa direct shipping).
Example calculation
For a 50 g part in PLA, 6 h print time and 8% failure rate. Currency follows your selection at the top.
- Filament$1.10
- Energy$0.14
- Amortization$0.22
- Failures (8%)$0.12
- Unit Cost$1.57
- Final Consumer Price (3× / 6% / 2%)$6.84
