When this printer makes sense
The A1 is the decent multicolor on-ramp without becoming a forum hostage. If you're upgrading from an Ender 3 and want a setup that prints without weekly calibration — with optional AMS Lite for 4 colors — it's the right bet at $399. Works for hobbyists selling on Etsy, doing custom commissions, or just wanting a printer that's a tool, not a side project.
Strengths and limitations
Strengths
Active Flow Control compensates for extrusion variance automatically — first Bambu in the budget tier with it. Handles PLA, PETG, TPU without hardware tweaks. AMS Lite ($249 add-on) brings multicolor at total cost still below a P1S alone. Direct drive well-tuned for flexibles.
Limitations
Bedslinger — caps effective speed on tall parts. Open frame can't handle ABS, ASA, Nylon or PC without warping. No active heated chamber. Standard 300 °C hotend covers essentials but doesn't reach H2C's 350 °C.
Typical print cost
A 5 g PLA keychain takes ~30 min on the A1 and costs $0.15-0.25 per unit (filament + energy + amortization). For volume production, unit cost drops to $0.10 with minimal markup at qty 100+. Not the setup for fast ROI on large functional parts, but for small decorative items, it works well.
Example calculation
For a 50 g part in PLA, 6 h print time and 8% failure rate. Currency follows your selection at the top.
- Filament$1.10
- Energy$0.14
- Amortization$0.12
- Failures (8%)$0.11
- Unit Cost$1.47
- Final Consumer Price (3× / 6% / 2%)$6.39
