Print cost on the Bambu Lab P1P

The P1P is Bambu's open-frame CoreXY workhorse, hitting 500 mm/s on tuned profiles. It runs the same AMS-compatible firmware as its siblings but the open enclosure limits it on ABS and ASA. Best for fast PLA/PETG production.

When this printer makes sense

The P1P is the open-frame version of the P1S — same CoreXY platform, same hotend, same speed, just without the enclosure. Worth considering if you only print PLA, PLA+, PETG and TPU (materials that don't need a chamber) and want to save $200-300 over the P1S. The P1P has become harder to find in 2026 — Bambu positions the P1S as the natural successor, and most resellers stocked the P1S instead. If ABS/ASA isn't on your roadmap for the next 2 years, the P1P delivers 90% of the P1S's value for less.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

Same CoreXY performance as the P1S (real 500 mm/s with Active Flow Control). AMS included in the Combo. Customizable side panels (stock comes in black; community sells colored kits). Lower acquisition cost than the P1S when in production. Easy to upgrade to enclosed with a DIY kit or the official enclosure (if you can find one).

Limitations

No enclosure means no functional ABS/ASA/Nylon/PC — only PLA, PETG, TPU. Availability dropped in 2026: Bambu positions the P1S as the successor, and resellers stocked P1S instead of P1P. Open frame is sensitive to drafts — keep it away from window or fan airflow. P1P-specific replacement parts (panels, hotend brackets) are getting harder to source too.

Typical print cost

A 50 g functional PETG part on the P1P costs $0.55-0.75 per unit in a 10-batch (filament + energy + amortization over $599). Compared to the P1S at the same volume, the P1P runs 20-30% cheaper per unit purely from the lower acquisition cost. A used P1P at a good discount is a bargain — but for a new printer in 2026, check whether the price difference justifies forgoing the P1S's enclosure.

Example calculation

For a 50 g part in PLA, 6 h print time and 8% failure rate. Currency follows your selection at the top.

  • Filament$1.10
  • Energy$0.16
  • Amortization$0.14
  • Failures (8%)$0.11
  • Unit Cost$1.52
  • Final Consumer Price (3× / 6% / 2%)$6.60
