When this printer makes sense

The AD5X is Flashforge's entry into multicolor — semi-open CoreXY (optional enclosure kit), real 600 mm/s speed, four-spool system for multi-material. MSRP $649. Makes sense for someone who wants 4-color multicolor without paying for the Bambu A1 Combo ($459+) — the AD5X comes in as a cheaper alternative with the optional enclosure kit included or separate.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

Native 4-color multicolor via Flashforge's own system. 600 mm/s speed. Optional enclosure kit available to add a passive chamber (covers ABS at the edge). Direct drive tuned for TPU. Quick-detachable nozzle.

Limitations

Flashforge community much smaller than Bambu/Creality. FlashPrint slicer less powerful than Bambu Studio. 220 × 220 × 220 mm volume is among the smallest in the segment. 280 °C hotend limits: ABS at the edge, Nylon and PC out. Multicolor system is newer, long-term reliability still being built.

Typical print cost

A 30 g multicolor PLA part with 4 colors (30% purge) on the AD5X costs $0.25-0.35 per unit in a 10-batch (filament + energy + amortization over $649). Compared to the A1 Combo, the AD5X delivers similar capability at similar price — the choice becomes ecosystem (whether you prefer Flashforge over Bambu).

Example calculation

For a 50 g part in PLA, 6 h print time and 8% failure rate. Currency follows your selection at the top.

  • Filament$1.10
  • Energy$0.22
  • Amortization$0.19
  • Failures (8%)$0.12
  • Unit Cost$1.63
  • Final Consumer Price (3× / 6% / 2%)$7.09
