Print cost on the Creality Ender 3 V2
The V2 refresh added a tempered-glass bed, a quieter mainboard with TMC2208 drivers and a redesigned UI. Same cartesian architecture as the original Ender 3, same community — slightly less tuning to get reliable first layers.

When this printer makes sense
The Ender 3 V2 (2020) is the transition between the classic Ender 3 and the modern era — keeps the Bowden bedslinger frame but adds a 32-bit silent mainboard, color screen and a carborundum glass bed. MSRP $209 originally. In 2026 almost nobody buys a new V2 from the factory — most have migrated to the V3 SE at a similar price with auto-leveling. Makes sense only if you find a used V2 in good condition with significant discount.
Strengths and limitations
Strengths
Silent mainboard (TMC drivers) — first Ender that didn't sound like an old industrial printer. Carborundum glass bed gives reliable adhesion. The entire Ender 3 community applies — every mod has a tutorial. Replacement parts cost peanuts.
Limitations
No auto-leveling from the factory — you need to add a BLTouch separately if you want a no-ritual first layer. Bowden slow for TPU. 260 °C hotend covers only PLA and PETG. 18,000 h useful life estimate is optimistic — 5+ year-old V2s start showing common mechanical issues (bearings, loose screws).
Typical print cost
A 25 g PLA part on the V2 costs $0.13-0.20 per unit in a 10-batch (amortization over $209). In 2026 only worth it if you find a V2 in great condition for under $150 used. For a new printer, always prefer the V3 SE — same price, much better hardware.
Example calculation
For a 50 g part in PLA, 6 h print time and 8% failure rate. Currency follows your selection at the top.
- Filament$1.10
- Energy$0.16
- Amortization$0.07
- Failures (8%)$0.11
- Unit Cost$1.44
- Final Consumer Price (3× / 6% / 2%)$6.25
